President

Brittany Davis

Brittany is originally from St Louis, Missouri. She became a transplant to Mississippi in November of 2020 after taking a job here in Jackson.

At the age of 18, she did her first triathlon, a 70.3, with her best friend Jo, and Jo’s dad. She ran cross country track in high school and thought “How hard could a triathlon be?” Boy, was she surprised. She ended up being the last mule in the barn, but she finished! She didn’t have a bike of her own, much less know how to use the gears to her advantage, and no idea how to fuel for a race. At the time her longest ride was 40 miles on a stationary bike at the gym.

Since then, she has learned so much. Brittany has her doctorate in physical therapy and specializes in the heart and lungs. She works to help our veterans at the G.V. (Sonny) Montgomery Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Jackson. If you catch her at work, she will be nerding out with her veterans about stretching and strengthening, and probably giving them a little bit of a sassy attitude.

Over the last 15 years triathlon, and all things active have become Brittany’s passion. But it isn’t all about the racing for Brittany. It is about the community, the camaraderie, being mentally and physically strong, and finding out how far she can push herself. Whether it is a sprint triathlon, a full distance triathlon, or an ultra, it is all about finding out what her body and mind can achieve.

Vice President

Leslie Robinson

Leslie lives in Brandon and has a passion for endurance athletics. She has completed many sprint and Olympic distance triathlons and 2 70.3s. Her first triathlon was Tri4Life in 2014, which was also her first open water swim. Her half-marathon PR was during one of those 70.3s. Leslie started running competitively in the “5 and under” age group road races and continued to compete competitively as a collegiate cross country and track athlete. She started triathlons as many former runners do – started riding a bike for cross training, then threw in some swimming just for fun. She is currently training for her first marathon to be followed by her first 50k, getting back to her running roots.

Leslie is enthusiastic about her role in the Mississippi Triathlon Club and bringing the sport of triathlon back to central MS and encouraging others to join in on the fun. Summers are best when spent sweating in the MS heat on the roads and trails with friends.

Janet

Secretary

Janet Carr Higgins

Janet is a dedicated advocate for health and wellness, with a passion for inspiring others to pursue their physical and mental best. A resident of Fairhope, Alabama, and a weekend resident of Lexington, Mississippi, Janet's endurance journey began in 2008 when she joined a local running group to train for the Chicago Marathon. Although she famously declared, “Never again!” upon finishing, she quickly changed her tune three days later, asking, “Where do I sign up for my next race?” From that moment, she was hooked. Over the years, Janet has completed multiple half marathons and even ventured into ultramarathons. In 2020, she expanded her horizons into triathlons, completing her first 70.3 at the Deep South Triathlon. Despite being sidelined by medical challenges, her determination has brought her back stronger, as she now trains for Ironman Texas 70.3 in April. As a proud back-of-the-pack athlete, Janet believes that triathlon is a sport for everyone. Her mission is to grow the sport in Mississippi by spreading the message that, regardless of age or ability, "anything is possible" In her professional life, Janet is a board-certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner. She is an instructor at the University of South Alabama, where she teaches psychiatric nursing, and she also practices part-time as a provider in Mobile, Alabama. Janet's dual expertise in mental and physical health fuels her passion for promoting wellness in all its forms. Janet is excited about the opportunity to serve on the Board of Directors, bringing her experience, enthusiasm, and commitment to advancing triathlon and its many benefits.

Johnathan Simon

Johnathan was born in New Zealand which is crazy about triathlons, but he was educated and worked in England where he did his first triathlon. He initially was thinking about doing an Eco challenge but was very interested in triathlons when the event first entered into the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. He bought a road bike in 2002 and entered his first triathlon in 2003. It was the London sprint triathlon. He was not very good at swimming so he trained at Tooting Bec Lido (100ft arc deco pool) for a whole year. He did his cycling training at Richmond park which was very hilly and he was living near Clapham Common and 3 laps was a flat 10k.

He had two aims for his first triathlon:

1. not to come last in the swim and

2. not to come last over all.

There were so many people they went in waves of 50 people. The swim was 750m in the London docklands. When he finished the swim he looked back and half his wave was still in the water. Job one done. 20km on the bike and 5km run he finished 20 mins after the winning time. He was so chuffed and felt he could do it all again then and now.. It was his downfall as he thought it was easy and didn’t train for the next one. Lesson learned always train no matter what.

Kathy

Member at Large

Kathy Clem

A transplant from Florida but now claiming the ‘Sip as home, Kathy became interested in triathlons ten years ago. She has done a number of sprints and olympic distance races, relayed for some longer distances as the swimmer and did one half ironman. After a break for a few years, Kathy decided that the best way to get back into triathlons was to accept an invitation as a board member on a new charity organization being created that would promote the sport of triathlon in the state of Mississippi. As a person that loves to swim, who has gotten over her fear of cycling (somewhat) and is working on her running (runkathyrun), she’s excited to share her love for and grow the sport of triathlon.

Kathy is the executive director of The Good Samaritan Center, a nonprofit charity helping struggling families with basic needs (food, clothing, shelter, etc) in central Mississippi and the Pinebelt. In her capacity as CEO, she has created and is the race director for a number of local races (run and cycle) that raise funds for Good Samaritan.

Kathy is a founding board member of MUTS (MS Ultra and Trail Society) that promotes ultra and trail running in the state of Mississippi. And five years ago, she helped create and continues to race direct for the annual Rainbow Run 5k, a fundraiser for MS Capital City Pride which is a LGBTQ+ charity creating safe spaces for queer people and their allies.
